The Agglomeration of US Ethnic Inventors

چکیده

The ethnic composition of US inventors is undergoing a signi…cant transformation — with deep impacts for the overall agglomeration of US innovation. This study applies an ethnic-name database to individual US patent records to explore these trends with greater detail. The contributions of Chinese and Indian scientists and engineers to US technology formation increase dramatically in the 1990s. At the same time, these ethnic inventors became more spatially concentrated across US cities. The combination of these two factors helps stop and reverse long-term declines in overall inventor agglomeration evident in the 1970s and 1980s. The heightened ethnic agglomeration is particularly evident in industry patents for high-tech sectors, and similar trends are not found in institutions constrained from agglomerating (e.g., universities, government). JEL Classi…cation: F15, F22, J44, J61, O31.

Why the Valley Went First: Agglomeration and Emergence in Regional Inventor Networks

Are the inventor networks of Silicon Valley more densely connected than those of the Boston Route 128 corridor? The evidence remains mostly historical and controversial to date. We develop an analysis of all the patented inventors in both regions since 1975 and find that the networks of Silicon Valley are simultaneously more connected and less robust than those of Boston. Of greatest interest, ...

Physically Proximate or Culturally Cohesive? Geography, Ethnic Ties, and Innovation in China

Recent scholarship suggests that collaboration between a firm’s headquarters personnel and indigenous overseas inventors enhances innovation by the latter. We explore how headquarters inventors’ physical proximity and intrafirm ethnic networks influence this knowledge spillover. Data from 104 U.S. multinational firms show that collaboration between inventors in the U.S. and on-site collaboratio...

Dearborn-Detroit Michigan: Ethnography of Faith and the U.S. Domestic and Foreign Policy Axis

The relationship between ethnic and faith communities in the United States and domestic forces relating to a converging and diverging social contract on the one hand, and US foreign, security and military policies in national, regional and global contexts on the other hand, constitutes the key focus of this paper and the ongoing research upon which it is based. Theories related to American ethn...

Birds of a Feather - Better Together? Exploring the Optimal Spatial Distribution of Ethnic Inventors from a Knowledge Flows Perspective

We develop the knowledge flow production function (KFPF) as a flexible tool for modeling access to knowledge by individuals and economies. We focus on how knowledge flows are affected by the spatial and ethnic proximity of inventors, paying particular attention to how the two forms of proximity interact. In the context of three simple models, we show how the optimal spatial concentration for a ...
